S.A.I. Art Studio
Andie Palynchuk
February 2016

Throughout the month of February Andie Palynchuk will be working at AKA in the TBA space providing a guided studio space for artistic exploration to individuals with intellectual and/or limited mobility. Through her work with the organization S.A.I. (Saskatchewan Alternative Initiatives) she will be providing an outlet for individuals supported by the organization to express themselves creatively. Exploring the positive effects that making art can have on the lives of people who have been marginalized.

Many who are participating have never been given an opportunity to create art let alone call themselves artists. Andie hopes to cultivate this identity for these men and women, celebrating their uniqueness, creativity and encouraging their individual talents and abilities. By working in a non-competitive, relaxed environment this will enable the artists to come closer to greater personal achievements, with the hopes of strengthening his/her individuality and self-esteem.

Andie’s intention for this project is not necessarily to teach art classes, but rather encourage each artist to create: what suits them, something that belongs to only them, and tells their story. This will challenge her own art making techniques and processes that she has been formally taught and question her own ideas of what constitutes art. It will provide her an opportunity to search for individual abilities, rather than focusing on their disabilities, working collaboratively and collectively in a safe, loving, empowering and accessible environment.

Andie Palynchuk is a Saskatchewan born Visual Artist who graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with Great Distinction in Studio Art from the University of Saskatchewan in 2013. She is currently residing in Saskatoon, where she is a founding member of Saskatoon’s Bridges Art Movement (BAM). She has been working at Saskatchewan Alternative Initiatives (S.A.I.) for nearly six years. She’s passionate about art, inclusion and serving the people in her community.

tba Projects is made possible by the City of Saskatoon, SaskLotteries, SaskCulture, the Saskatchewan Arts Board and the Canada Council for the Arts.
