Apophatic Constructions, TBA Projects Residency
Jessica Morgun
September 2015

Visit the gallery during the month of September to view Morgun’s project in process.

Is it possible for an object to hold a kind of authority on memory, perhaps in its very absence?  This question guides the building of a series of found object constructions and the documentation of shadows cast by these constructions through drawings on the gallery walls. The title for this project refers to the practice of apophatic inquiry – a method of theological inquiry where one describes a thing by referring to what it is not, or its absence.

Jessica Morgun was born in Saskatoon, where she studied art education, going on to receive a Master of Arts in Theological Studies in Vancouver BC.  She has been a teacher to elementary and secondary students in Saskatoon Public Schools, as well as students in several post-secondary contexts. She is currently enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Saskatchewan. Morgun’s work is primarily drawing-based with an interest in installation, sculpture, and public practice. Her current research is focused on the problematic nature of monuments, both public and personal, as representations of epic histories. Her work has sought to bring drawing, as well as other ephemeral and transitory mediums, into the public sphere. Morgun has had solo exhibitions in Vancouver and Saskatoon, a public performance at the University of Saskatchewan, has curated a collaborative community art project, and has had several group exhibitions in Saskatchewan with upcoming shows in Lethbridge, Alberta; and Toowoomba, Australia.

TBA Projects is made possible by the City of Saskatoon, SaskLotteries, SaskCulture, the Saskatchewan Arts Board and the Canada Council for the Arts.
