Call for applicants: Managing editor

About BlackFlash Magazine

BlackFlash Magazine is a Saskatoon-based non-profit visual arts magazine published in print three times a year and ongoing on the Internet. BlackFlash publishes critical texts and showcases the work of emerging and established photographic, video, and new media artists.

Managing editor position – summary

BlackFlash Magazine is in need of a creative, motivated individual who will run the magazine as managing editor. BlackFlash is seeking an individual who has experience in the publishing industry, and as an editor. A successful candidate will have a vision for the magazine, be able to work independently, and prioritize effectively, while reporting to the board of directors regularly, and meeting with the editorial committee. The successful candidate will start Monday, June 3, 2013, and can expect to work 25 hours per week.

Specific tasks include:

  • Planning and organizing content for the magazine.

  • Editing    the magazine for accuracy, spelling, grammar, writing style, design, and photos.

  • Ensuring the final draft of the magazine is complete before sending to print.

  • Managing the magazine’s website.

  • Working with staff and the board to create and follow a budget.

  • Helping with grants.

  • Working with staff and the board to coordinate volunteers.

  • Meeting with the editorial committee.

  • Managing correspondence.

  • Liaising with other agencies, organizations, and groups.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

 

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Excellent organization and communication skills.

  • Experience creating and following a budget.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat Suite.

  • Able to work independently and self-motivated.

  • Relevant experience in a similar position.

  • Suitable education, or equivalent experience.

  • Experience working with an arts organization or non-profit an asset.
