aka is taking the annual members ARTwalk to a whole new level.

This year aka invited members to do panoramic prints! These 1 x 4’ panoramic prints were displayed in windows of various sites along 20th Street in the Riversdale Cultural Corridor. They’ll be on display for the first week of July, and may even be up in the spaces for the entire summer.

As in past years, we’ll conduct an ARTwalk tour from site to site, and the selected artists will be asked to be on the tour to talk about their work. This will take place in conjunction with Street Meet: Saskatoon’s 1st Annual Street, Public and Graffiti Art Festival and the Street Meet Artist Tour on July 7th, 2013. Between July 5 and 7, Street Meet will explore new and exciting ways to make, appreciate and talk about public art, with workshops and presentations by artists that are local, national and international.

Check back here for images of the works installed in various sites, but you can see the aka members whose artwork will soon be adorning 20th Street and the Riversdale Cultural Corridor.

Ania Slu(sarczyk) was born on December 23, 1982 in Krakow, Poland. She obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts (majoring in Painting and Drawing) from the University of Saskatchewan in 2005. She is a primarily two-dimensional media artist because she likes to see the world as a flattened composition. Animals have fascinated her since she was a small child.

Barrett Russell is thirty years old and lives in Saskatoon Saskatchewan where he received a BFA (majoring in painting) in 2005 and currently works professionally as a tattooist.  He rarely shows other mediums than tattooing, yet works rather equally on painting and photography as well.  Painting; his concentration of studio work continues most mature and at home, however, photography has been an undercurrent to this for the past five years, and in some cases is an end in itself.  Russell’s photography work, still unsure of itself, remains mostly as light studies, techniques, and the odd small conceptual still life.  The conceptual stance of Russell’s work is rooted in metaphor to tell or hint at narrative, and his main desire is to gravitate towards a meta narrative potential for the co-signification of the sign to signifier within a given work.

Barrett’s work is installed at 229 20th Street West.

Biliana picture

Biliana Velkova‘s practice incorporates photography, video, and performance to explore the significance of material consumption, brand obsession, and issues of social identity.
A Bulgarian who immigrated with her family to Canada in her teen years, Velkova was transplanted from a Communist upbringing directly into Western culture. This experience created a deep impression on Velkova, both personally and as an artist, and has provided her with a unique perception and fascination with consumerism, in both its superficial and its more ingrained, socio-cultural impacts.

Biliana Velkova completed her BFA in Painting and Drawing at Concordia University in Montreal and her MFA at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. She has exhibited her work both locally and internationally. She is currently the Executive Directorof PAVED Arts in Saskatoon. More of her work can be seen here.

Biliana’s work is installed at the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, which is next door to aka at 408 20th Street West.
