Crude: Sublime Sculptural Landscapes by Shelly Rahme

Shelly Rahme uses industrial materials to create sculpture and site – specific installations. She returns these mined, extruded and blasted materials to a quasi natural state: glass becomes a roaring sea, drywall becomes a mountain, ashphalt and concrete become rock formations. Rahme also works more narratively, loosely recreating historical landscapes that depict the terrible yet beautiful power of nature. Moreover, she creates a contemporary sublime, alluding to ways that we can carve and reorder the land for industrial purposes, with disregard for the fragility and necessity of nature.
