“The greatest obstacle to living is expectancy, which hangs upon tomorrow and loses today.” So writes Seneca in his treatise On the Shortness of Life, wherein he pontificates on labour, preoccupation and devotion to one’s own pursuits. Viewed with a mind to the exquisite beauty and shortness of life, Jane Buyers and Zachari Logan share uncanny and intrinsic connections between their practices.
Buyer’s Pratica works (1995, 1997, 2000) are a series of fictional bronze tools activating an imagined daily life. Coupled with her new Amend drawings, in which Buyers’ uses repetition, folding and mirroring to create ephemeral yet architectural kaleidoscopic renderings, the artist’s work alludes to an overriding tension and interplay between the personal and the mechanical. Logan’s Cut-Flowers, ceramic, painted representations of single cut flowers, indicate a similar duality between mortality and strength; for the artist a relationship between process and desire. In connection, Logan will create a site-specific 4 x 8, freestanding drawing.
Together the artists share aesthetics, experimentation with medium and an instrumentalization of nature (through the still life and historical, literary and real life botanical references). Between the artists there is a clear discourse spanning repetition, labour, sexuality and gender. Their works demonstrative of their rituals and habits, acting as a record of their exacting gestures. Their rigorous practices emblematic of a life-long preoccupation and pleasure in the daily journey of pursuit.

Jane Buyers is Distinguished Professor Emerita in the Fine Arts Department at the University of Waterloo and a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. She has participated in over forty solo exhibitions and in more than one hundred group exhibitions in Canada, the United States and Europe. A survey of her work, Gather…Arrange…Maintain, was organized by the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, 2013-2015. She is represented by Paul Petro Contemporary Art, Toronto.
Zachari Logan has been exhibited widely, in group and solo exhibitions throughout North America and Europe and can be found in public and private collections worldwide. Logan has attended residencies in Paris, with Galerie Jean Roch Dard, in rural Tennessee at Sassafras ARC/Liberty, in Calgary through ACAD’s Visiting Artist Program, in Vienna through Museum Quartier’s quartier21 and Schliefmuhlgasse 12-14, in London at Angus-Hughes Gallery, in Brooklyn at the International Studio and Curatorial Program, and recently in the Bronx at Wave Hill Botanical Gardens.
