Michael Benjamin Brown & Sylvia Matas
One night only bookworks exhibit
March 20, 2012

Brown and Matas present their newest book works in an international tour that started in Rejkavik, Iceland.

Sylvia Matas’ In Every Direction consists of images and text. There is no narrative –  it is more of an incomplete collection of information that describes overlapping mental and physical environments. There are references to (among other things) sound and movement through time and space, in and out of intensity and in and out of focus. In Every Direction is an artist multiple (6.125 in x 7.25 inches,  45 pages, 2011, drawings/ photographs/ text, in an edition of 100).

Financial assistance for this project was provided by the City of Winnipeg through the Winnipeg Arts Council.

Sylvia Matas, In Every Direction

Sylvia Matas is an interdisciplinary artist. She grew up in Winnipeg, and after living in China, Montreal and London (where she received her MFA in 2008) she has returned home. Her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally.

“My work explores the complexity of the human experience via universal themes such as time, space, mind, cosmology, nature and a personal curiosity with existing in an inexplicable world.”

You can see more of Sylvia Matas’ work at her website.

Michael Benjamin Brown’s bookwork WINTERHOUSES is an ‘unsequenced’ group of 60 pages of images and language. Symbols, ranging from the scientific to the mythological, the numinous to the beautiful, and the mysterious to the matter-of-fact weave throughout the work, while changing form on any given page. Metamorphosing interpretation occurs through individual’s random arrangements. Viewers might conjure narratives or simply a singular impression.

WINTERHOUSES is an artist multiple (Hardcover, 60 pages, unbound, 5 7/8″ x 8 15/16″ x 1 3/16″, 2011, drawings/inkpaintings/photographs/written words/composites, in an edition of 150) Check out the link to the documentation of this project at this web site.

This project was made with the generous support of the Manitoba Arts Council.

Michael Benjamin Brown is an interdisciplinary artist and MFA graduate from the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, England. His work has been exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally. Michael is currently living and working in Wpg, MB.

WINTERHOUSES, Michael Benjamin Brown

“My work is interdisciplinary; allowing me to prioritize content, and then give special treatment to the form best suited to the idea. I want my work to not only create and open many doors to an ‘experiential space’ at the intersection of the physical and metaphysical but to allow you to enter many doors at the same time. There the work can act as the social participant, artist mythmaker, and scientific skeptic.”
