A sequence of five photographs of hail ricocheting off of the Elbow River in Calgary is placed above the AKA Artist-Run Centre in Saskatoon, providing a large scale look at the river’s currents and the gradations of it’s subtly changing colours. This installation is part of Seth Fluker’s cross Canada billboard installation Blueberry Hill, a series of photographs created between 2013 – 2017 that reveal his private reckoning with and personal impression of the country’s contemporary landscape. His photographs provide a respite from advertising, and an opportunity for viewers to meditate on notions of land, national identity, and sense of place. Four additional billboards within walking distance of AKA, flank the Elbow River quintet and together they depict the diversity of Alberta’s terrain, and affirm Fluker’s careful, nuanced ways of looking.
Additional Saskatoon billboard locations:
