tba Projects Residency
David Stonhouse
January 2016

Through out the month of January, Saskatoon based artist David Stonhouse will explore his studio practice in AKA’s TBA space, enabling visitors to see the process, experimentation and evolution of his work. Stonhouse’s current research delves into the act and definition of painting. His canvases are sculptural, patterned and illusive, as he pushes and pulls space in his layered experiments.

David Stonhouse holds a BEd and BFA from the University of Saskatchewan. In addition to part-time teaching for Saskatoon Public Schools, he is also a program guide at the Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan in addition to his involvement with the Saskatoon art community in a variety of volunteer capacities: as an artist, administrator, and arts promoter. He is one of the founding members of BAM (Bridges Art Movement), a grassroots artist-run organization in Saskatoon, and he also maintains the blog, yxeart.com. His varied work synthesizes many disparate influences ranging from the aesthetics of the grotesque to the illusion of deep space within a two dimensional surface. His all-over compositions often allude to certain threads within abstract expressionism, infused with a cool, pop sensibility and playful, unexpected counterpoints.

TBA Projects is made possible by the City of Saskatoon, SaskLotteries, SaskCulture, the Saskatchewan Arts Board and the Canada Council for the Arts.
