Applications are now being accepted for the December 2013 session of the Thematic Residency Program on Toronto Islands.
The Thematic Residency Program on Toronto Islands offers artists the opportunity to work independently with the mentorship of a visiting professional artist, curator or critic working in international contemporary art. Thematic residencies explore various models including studio work, formal lectures, group discussion, peer collaboration and outdoor retreats. This direction allows individual residents to find common ground amongst each other’s disparate practices and establish new connections through communal dialogue.
EVERGREEN MINUTES OF THE PHANTOM FIGURES

Through a collaborative process similar to creating an exquisite corpse we will write, choreograph and shoot a 16mm film during our time together on Toronto Islands. As part of our location scouting, dream character casting, snooze button experimentation and set design we will investigate themes related to science fiction and Surrealism and explore the idea that the practice of note-taking is not where you take your notes but where they take you. Evergreen Minutes Of The Phantom Figures will also involve short workshops on topics such as Night Shades design, Architecture of the Bed and dream incubation processes. As we work, a special guest edition of Night Times Newspaper will be compiled to house our film’s screenplay, storyboards and nocturnal journalism.
Tamara HENDERSON (MFA, 2012, Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, Stockholm) lives and works in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Recent exhibitions include an upcoming solo exhibition at Erin Stump Projects (Toronto); the two person exhibition Bottles Under The Influence (with Julia Feyrer, Walter Phillips Gallery, Banff); and group exhibitions On The Tip Of My Tongue (Magasin 3, Stockholm) and dOCUMENTA (13) (Fridericianum, Kassel). Henderson is shortlisted for the 2013 Sobey Art Award.

Accommodations include fifteen private bedrooms with shared bathrooms, coin-operated laundry machines and Wi-Fi throughout the building. Residents share a communal kitchen with personal refrigerator space and dry storage. The kitchen is fully stocked with amenities including a stove, oven and microwave; generous counter space to prepare meals; dinnerware, flatware and cookware; and staples such as coffee, tea and sugar. A banquet table that seats eighteen sits at the center of the large bright room amongst couches and houseplants. Studios are well-ventilated with high ceilings, tall windows and large walls. Tables, lamps and chairs are available. Facilities include a library, a black and white dark room, a woodworking studio, and a projector and PA system.
The building is located on acres of land that include a Blue Flag beach with an uninterrupted view of Lake Ontario, a forest, sprawling lawns and gardens filled with flowers, fruit and vegetables. Tennis courts and a baseball diamond are nearby. The Gibraltar Point Lighthouse, the oldest surviving lighthouse on the Great Lakes, is located across the street.
